HILLSBORO, N.C. - In a high-scoring game, the Elon University Club Hockey team emerged victorious in their season opener against Appalachian State University last night. The game showcased an outstanding performance by the team, featuring standout performances from several players, including the game-winner by Danny Heslin, and an impressive showing by goalie Wells Masterson.
The Phoenix got out to a hot start by leading the Mountaineers 2-1 within the first 10 minutes of the game, with goals scored by Heslin and Ben Rosenthal. The scoring would not end there though, as Appalachian State fought back to tie it up. Late scoring by Elon’s Russell Erb and Appalachian State’s Lucas Tremont would lead to both teams going into the locker room tied at 3 apiece after the first.
After a back and forth first period, the second saw a much more physical battle take place. Both teams would combine for 8 penalties, of which the Phoenix were able to capitalize on only one of their 5 power plays. This late goal was notched by Elon’s Brett Pritchard, with just over 5 minutes to go in the period.
In the third, we saw a culmination of both periods come together, as both teams found their way into the penalty box and onto the scoreboard. Appalachian State would tie things up a little over 4 minutes into the period, but that would only spark the Phoenix offense as they would go on to score 3 more goals to close out the Mountaineers.
Sophomore Brett Pritchard emerged as a pivotal player, not only scoring a goal but also providing two crucial assists, helping his teammates capitalize on scoring opportunities. The leadership pair of Mason Esworthy and Aidan Connolly also played significant roles in the game, each contributing two assists to the team's offensive effort.
While the offense was firing on all cylinders, the Phoenix found stability on their back end with a spectacular performance coming from goaltender Wells Masterson, who posted 49 saves in the effort. Masterson's acrobatic saves and unwavering composure under pressure helped Elon maintain their lead throughout the game. The sophomore goaltender, fresh off being named the ACCHL rookie of the year last year, has picked up right where he left off in making the Phoenix a true threat in any game they play this year.
